For those of us who lived through 90s fashion the first time around, it was a glorious era. At least in my book.
Forgetting about the fashion for a second, let’s paint a little picture of our 90s lives. From the Spice Girls to the Macarena and the allowances poured into adding to our Beanie Baby collections (not to mention the hours we spent on AIM), it was a great time to be a kid. The fashion was just the icing on the cake. How I miss my floral print skater dresses, butterfly hair clips, and absurdly high platform shoes..ahh, the memories.
Now fast-forward 20 some odd years later and the 90s have made a huge comeback on the runways, from chokers to flannel and back again. But how do we incorporate these trends into our everyday style and reinterpret in a fresh way? Which trends from the 90s are back and which aren’t? Check out a few of my favorite ways to tie the 90s trend into an outfit (and you can leave the crimped hair behind).
A hint of grunge – Something about this outfit felt very ‘lady-like grunge’ to me..if that’s a thing. Maxi dress + bomber jacket + mini backpack = homage to the 90s. A pale pink lip and a pair of strappy sandals give the outfit a fresh look that keeps it from looking like I just stepped out of 1995.
Tie a shirt around your waist – Pick a trusty flannel, tie said shirt around your midsection, and you could be an extra from the cast of My So-Called Life. Try pairing a graphic tee with a classic flannel around your waist, topped off with distressed denim and lace up flats.
Overalls – There are so many great options out right now from these faux leather Topshop ones to these skinny strap Free People overalls. Pair them with a long sleeve striped tee and a great hat for a laid-back weekend look.
Bandana – Talk about an easy way to add a little 90s to your outfit. Add a bandana around your neck to a classic jeans/tee combo ala Happily Grey and you’re ready to go.
Round sunnies – I wish these worked on my face, but alas, they do not. That still doesn’t prevent me from admiring from afar! The classic round-shaped pair of sunglasses is quintessential 90s. Loving this Sunday Somewhere pair as well as these Super’s. An easy add to any outfit for an instant 90s vibe.
Chokers – Chokers are one of my favorite 90s comebacks (you can last see me sporting one here). The super sleek, metal options are by far and away more chic than their 90s counterparts. This minimalist gold band goes with everything not to mention this simple, silver Eddie Borgo option.
PS. I’ve linked my favorite leather backpacks under $100, which you can find here & here (this little gingham guy is also adorable and only $20). And if you happen to be looking for a mini splurge, this Kate Spade and this Marc Jacobs are a slightly higher price point, but if you plan to carry it for more than one season, it’s likely worth the investment.
