Peacoats. Oversized. Capes. Dusters. Faux Fur. Anoraks. There are so many gorgeous coat styles out as we head into winter, it’s hard to know where to begin.

For many years, I’ve been adding to an extensive coat collection – it started back when I was in high school and thankfully I’ve remained roughly the same size so I can still wear the favorites I’ve had for years. I believe in investing in well-made, quality outerwear I can have for years. As good as it feels to find a steal at $50, typically those pieces won’t last more than a season or two. So when it comes to outerwear, I’m willing to spend a little more to get several years of wear.

There are the timeless classics: the peacoat, the trench, the parka..but what about considering a twist this winter? What about a boho-inspired, buttery suede coat? Or a oversized lavender topper?

J.Crew has stolen my heart with the pleothera of perfectly tailored, expertly-detailed assortment of coats spanning every color of the rainbow and getting us all to ponder options past the winter safety zone of black and grey.

Feeling like branching out beyond the classics this year? Take a peek at my top five picks – all bordering on the slightly adventurous – and consider trying one on for size.

1. Cocoon coat – The gotta-have silhouette of the season, in every imaginable texture and color. Spice up your coat closet’s color palette with a pretty pale pink, a luxurious navy, or bright blue.

2. The cape – Pretty details reign this season and what better way to up the ante than with this uber chic toggled Kooples option or this pink-accented MSGM stunner. Capes are a great way to add a quick dose of femininity to your outfit.

3. Faux fur topper – Thanks to the heavily 70s influenced season, a slew of rich colors are ripe for the picking. Venture past the classic black or off-white and try a delicate pink or moss green on for size. You won’t regret it.

4. Pop of red – Brighten up frigid winter days by introducing a touch of crimson. Take your pick from every silhouette under the sun this year: a minimalist drape collar style, the short belted version, or Rag & Bone’s oversized take.

5. Lady-like plaid coat – Nothing makes me feel like it’s truly winter like a good ol’ injection of plaid. Consider a black and white print, a traditional tartan, or a less iconic but equally chic plum version.
