Effortless style: The ultimate goal. The elusive balance of effortlessly chic, seamlessly merging a laid-back vibe with just a hint of polish.
No matter whose style you envy, be it the likes of Olivia Palermo, Julia Engel, or Jaime Chung, we all have our go-to style star, and my bet is that yours has this seemingly ambiguous artform dialed in.
Now, the bright side of this intangible quality? Mastering the art can be a lot easier than you think! I’ve rounded up my five favorite tips that will have you nailing the art of effortless style in no time!
INVEST IN GREAT BASICS.
Luxe fabrics, timeless silhouettes, an array of neutrals, investing in great basics pays off in spades. During those moments where you’re standing in front of your closet with ‘nothing to wear,’ you’ll be happy to have these wardrobe basics in place to mix in with the trendier pieces in your closet. It makes getting dressed that much easier and mixing and matching a no brainer.
KEEP IT SIMPLE.
Err on the side of simpler than not. Overly busy is rarely a good thing. Instead pick one statement piece and run with it. If you’re opting for a seriously fierce hat, then keep the jewelry minimal. If you’re rocking a top with some awesome volume or texture, tone down the bottom half of your outfit. With a little practice and patience, finding this balance becomes relatively easy.
FIT RULES ALL.
It doesn’t matter if it was the greatest bargain in the world. If it doesn’t fit like a glove, do yourself a favor and pass on it. A few years ago I realized that the purchases I was making, the ones where I’d convinced myself that it was great – despite the fit lacking – had resulted in an embarrassingly large array of clothes sitting in my closet with the tags on, simultaneously wasting money and doing little more for me than taking up valuable closet space (I’m guessing I’m not the only one who has faced this situation). So when I moved to LA, I not only overhauled my closet, I also scoured the city for a great tailor. If the fit isn’t perfect, I’d rather pay a little more to have a piece enhance what I’ve got, then work against me. A inch here or there can truly make a world of difference.
WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, ADD IN AN EASY POP OF COLOR.
Elevate your whole outfit to the next level by adding in a little color. When set again a neutral backdrop, a little dose of color makes that much more of a statement. Add in a pop of color with your shoes, a great bag, or a colorful jacket. I’ve been really in tune with a neutral palette lately, so I’ll add in one colorful piece and keep the rest of my outfit white, grey, nude, or black.
KNOW YOUR STYLE.
Know what you love to wear..and where you draw the line. Effortless style is all about knowing which silhouettes are best suited for your body type, which colors compliment your skin tone, and overall, what looks best on your body. Emphasize your assets and camouflage the parts that may not be your favorite (come on, nobody’s perfect :)). That’s not to say you can’t try out a trend or two from time to time, but know your signature, and use it as your starting point. Just like creating effortless style, figuring out your signature is an art that can take time to hone, but once you figure it out, the rest will be easy.
