Festival style can be tricky for anyone to maneuver. You’re dealing with the elements – typically some form of sand, mud, or dirt not to mention the summer heat – and yet somehow you’re supposed to look fresh as a daisy through the entire process. Some girls just seem to have mastered this sorcery; looking effortless and gorgeous despite these very real issues we ladies face. How do you stay cool enough during the day, warm enough at night, yet look like you stepped out of a Free People catalog?
I’ll be honest: Festival style wasn’t intuitive for me my first go around. At times my style can be slightly boho, but typically I prefer a bit more polish. So what was the secret?
As with most things, I found the key to be balance. I love any chance to play around with fashion. Wearing something that I won’t necessarily don in my day-to-day, but still dressing like myself and keeping some level of modesty intact is key whether I’m attending a more laid-back event like Outsidelands or a more amped version like Coachella. While I’m no stranger to showing a peek of skin here and there, it needs to be a strategic play so I’m not left feeling overexposed.
Because this has been my main concern since I began attending festivals, I wrote a guide to keeping your festival wear classy, and gathered a list of my festival essentials that you’ll need whether it’s Coachella, Bonnaroo, or Stagecoach. If you’re about to attend a festival for the first time or even if you are a long time veteran of the festival circuit, there are likely at least a few things on this list that will make your trip more enjoyable.
Getting down to specifics with my festival style, the main weapon in my arsenal is an attack of rompers and jumpsuits. My love of these two probably comes as no surprise, and there’s no better time to break them out than for a festival! Easy, stylish, and no muss, no fuss.
Scooping up this denim jumpsuit from Urban Outfitters was a no brainer as I started to think about this year’s festival circuit. Since this one will likely go quick now that it hit the sale rack, I’ve linked to a few other of my favorite denim jumpsuits here, here & here.
The jumpsuit takes center stage when you’re wearing a piece like this, so I tend to keep my accessories on the neutral side, in this case, hints of black and nude. There is still plenty of attention to detail with the cool triangle closure on my suede bag, the pockets on the jumpsuit, and the metal hardware on the belt. Lately I can’t get enough of suede necklaces — so much so that I have them in black, brown & burgundy. On this particular day, I wrapped it around several times for a choker effect, but typically I wear them wrapped once, tied to the side in the front.
This nude belt is also destined to be a mainstay in my wardrobe this spring and summer. It’s the perfect width, and I love the metal detailing. It’s just enough for a little bit of edge, but far from over the top, destined to cinch the waist on my most feminine dresses. And it’s an absolute steal right now at $30.
